Rainy days makes us wish of sun and sunscreen

So with all this rain we have been having one can only think of sitting on our decks for the first time with the sun beating on us. In those moments, we enjoy the heat of its rays and forget to apply sunscreen, hence the first sunburn of the year. This is a delightful thought but sitting on the deck with an actually Sunburn cocktail in hand is speechless. This comes from California and can be made with tequila or rum. I prefer a little heat but it is a perfect blend of semi-sweet and spice. Mix away!

2 0z Dark rum or Tequila( Ghost has my fav for this)
1/2 oz Elderflower liqueur
1 oz passion fruit liqueur or puree
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1-2 jalapeno slices

Muddle jalapeno and lemon juice in mixing glass, add rest of ingredients and shake over ice. Strain into a tall glass and garnish with a slice of lemon and jalapeno.

Don’t forget your sunscreen but enjoy the burn inside.

Fiery Old-Fashions

Fiery Old-Fashions

firely-old-fashionFor Thanksgiving this year, I thought I would incorporate this tasty little number.   Never one to follow the trends – I’m opting away from the creamed pumpkin and apple cider based drinks.  I say bring on the Whisky! This lovely twist on an old Fashion is light and refreshing with a delightful burst of cinnamon at the end.  The first one makes the next two seem like a great idea – so just make sure you help Grandma to the dining room table when the turkey is served!

  • 1 shot Fireball Whisky
  • 1 shot bourbon
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp orange juice
  • 4 dashes of bitters (we used orange bitters)

Shake and strain into an old fashion glass and garnish with orange peel.

Mint Julep

Mint Julep

mintjulepAs many of you know, one of the most iconic American events is happening this weekend. That’s right, the 142 annual Kentucky Derby. This magnificent event deemed “the best two minutes in sports” has run without interruption since 1875. Steeped in wonderful traditions, this event oozes charm and sophistication. Even though most of us will never attend one of these events in person– there’s no reason we can’t play along as we watch the race from home. So don your favorite hat and fix yourself a delightful Mint Julep.
Mint Julep Recipe
• 2 cups sugar
• 2 cups water
• Sprigs of fresh mint
• Crushed ice
• Bourbon Whisky
• Silver Julep Cups
Make simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Kentucky Bourbon Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

French 75 Cocktail

French 75 Cocktail

french75What was once old is new again!  And that goes for the French 75 cocktail (or as the French call it a Soixante Quinze).  The drink originated in Paris during World War I, and was said to “have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun!”

Well its made a stunning resurgence and I have to say I think that’s wonderful news.  One sip and you’ll have to agree.  I made mine with Uncle Val’s Gin because of all the wonderful botanical flavors in it.  As for the sparkling wine aspect – stick to Proseccos’ – their crisp, clean flavors and affordable price points make them perfect for this recipe.

Make this your first summer sipper on your patio when the sun comes out tomorrow!

Ingredients:

  •   1 oz gin
  •   1/2 oz. simple syrup
  •   1/2 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice
  •   Brut Champagne or dry sparkling white wine
  •    lemon twist, to garnish

Instructions:

Combine gin, simple syrup and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.  Shake until well chilled and strain in a glass.   Top with Champagne and garnish with long lemon twist to serve
