Rainy days makes us wish of sun and sunscreen

So with all this rain we have been having one can only think of sitting on our decks for the first time with the sun beating on us. In those moments, we enjoy the heat of its rays and forget to apply sunscreen, hence the first sunburn of the year. This is a delightful thought but sitting on the deck with an actually Sunburn cocktail in hand is speechless. This comes from California and can be made with tequila or rum. I prefer a little heat but it is a perfect blend of semi-sweet and spice. Mix away!

2 0z Dark rum or Tequila( Ghost has my fav for this)
1/2 oz Elderflower liqueur
1 oz passion fruit liqueur or puree
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1-2 jalapeno slices

Muddle jalapeno and lemon juice in mixing glass, add rest of ingredients and shake over ice. Strain into a tall glass and garnish with a slice of lemon and jalapeno.

Don’t forget your sunscreen but enjoy the burn inside.

Gin is a medicinal spirit?

With flu season in full effect, why not enjoy an adult beverage while protecting our bodies for a healthier 2019? In the Middle ages, gin was used as a form of herbal medicine to fight diseases. Made with botanicals such as coriander, rosemary, cassia, nutmeg, sage and angelica root, nothing is more remarked than Juniper berries. It is one of the super berries of the world that is jammed packed with antioxidants and infection fighting qualities.

Some benefits

* Naturally an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial berry that helps cells regenerate especially in the skin to help ward off wrinkles

* A natural diuretic which helps to flush out toxins, bacteria and excess fluids. Doing this helps eliminate in liver and controls water retention which leads to bloating while enzymes break down food and help digestion

* Oils from the berries can alleviate coughs by expelling mucus in throat and lung

* Got a sensitivity to sulfites which can cause allergens? Gin has one of the lowest in the liquor world

* Free radicals cause many disease in our bodies. Super berries fight and help destroy them while flavonoids increases blood circulation preventing heart disease

* Antioxidants can relieve chronic pain including gout, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation of joints

Finally when mixed with diet tonic water and a few slices of lime, it is only about 100 calories which helps with our New Year Resolutions. Consuming in moderation can lead to many health benefits and Hickeys has a variety of different gins to try from many countries. Enjoy by a fire on a cold night and find your favorite.

Double Barrel Zinfandel

A blend of Zinfandel, Petite Syrah and Merlot; The Federalist Bourbon Barrel-Aged Zinfandel marries intense raspberry and black pepper with vanilla, a touch of clove spice and rich caramel.  The rich, ripe flavor of Zinfandel followed by the caramel flavor of bourbon is a wonderful pairing, but beware, the a.p.v. is a substantial 15.5 %.

Rosé Wine

Stuck in the “what wine should we have for Easter” conundrum?  How about a Rosé?  Rosé wines are remarkably versatile because they fall in between the extremes of red and white — less intense than a big, tannic red but with more depth and character than a light white.  And don’t let the pink color fool you – Rosés are NOT sweet.  Choose one from the Provence area of France and they are particularly dry with nice minerality.  A little chill makes them perfect warm weather sippers and they pair well with most items on your Easter Dinner menu.

Glenadoulgh Double Barrel Whiskey

A new and unique style of light and floral whiskey distilled in a Coffey still (like whiskey, another great Irish invention!) from a mash bill of Irish malted barley and corn. It spends three and a half years in American oak first-fill Bourbon barrels before being finished for six months in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. The Bourbon barrels impart deep, robust chocolate and caramel notes, while the Oloroso casks lighten the palate with fruitier notes and touches of nutty tones. With both barrels being oak, you get that beautiful vanilla thread you’d expect to run through an Irish whiskey.
