1. There Are Many Different Types of Whiskey
Whiskey is never just whiskey. They are generally broken down by their origin. We’ve included the most common below, along with their defining characteristics:
- Bourbon Whiskey (USA): Made with at least 51% corn, charred oak barrel aged, with a rich and sweet flavor.
- Tennessee Whisky (USA): Made in the State of Tennessee, similar distilling process to bourbon, but with charcoal filtering (the Lincoln County Process).
- Rye Whiskey (USA): Made with at least 51% rye grain, often with a spicy and bold flavor.
- Irish Whiskey: Made primarily from barley and triple-distilled for smoothness before being aged at least 3 years. Often light and fruity.
- Scotch Whiskey: Made with malted barley and grains, aged at least 3 years, with a peaty or smoky flavor profile.
- Japanese Whiskey: Inspired by Scotch production methods, with a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship and smooth and balanced flavor profiles.
- Canadian Whiskey: Uses blends of rye, corn, wheat, and barley, and is often mixed with a flavoring whiskey. Canada is also known for rye whiskey.
2. Not All Options are a Good Whiskey for Beginners
For your first whiskey, especially if you’re planning it as part of a cocktail, some whiskeys are very strong in terms of both strong flavors and strong alcohol. Try to avoid whiskeys with very dominant flavors, such as peat or smoke. We generally recommend smooth, balanced whiskeys—ones with a mix of flavors—such as Bourbon or Irish whiskeys that are mellow and have fruit, caramel, and vanilla notes. Milder Scotch whiskeys are another great starting point.
3. Tips for Enjoying Your First Whiskey
Whether you’re trying whiskey alone or with friends, we’ve collected a few last tips to make your whiskey journey more enjoyable.
- Start with small sips. Whiskey, even the smoothest, still has bold flavors. Take it slow and let your palate become accustomed to the new flavors.
- Try water and ice. Some whiskeys taste better with a splash of water or a large ice cube to soften the burn and bring out flavors.
- Make a mixed drink. If you’re having issues with straight whiskey, try making a cocktail. We’ve got a full cocktail book that includes bourbon Mint Juleps and more!
