The Best Part of Fall

The Best Part of Fall

pumkingI love when the weather starts to turn, and you feel that cool crisp snap in the air.  When the leaves are just starting to turn.  That’s when I love to pop open a Southern Tier Pumking!  It’s a great way to “welcome” the fall season.  The weather is warm enough to enjoy cold beer, but cool enough that you want a little flavor oomph to invoke a little warmth.   Relax and enjoy one now, while the season is just starting:  because it’s only a matter of time before it’s good bye Pumking and hello coffee stouts!

Hickey’s 5 Top Beers of Summer

Hickey’s 5 Top Beers of Summer

With over 600 craft beers to choose from, your probably wondering what to try next.  Here’s our list of the “Top Five” selling craft brews for the month of June. I’ve included the brewer’s notes on each to give you their interpretation the beer – see if they meet your expectations.  Maybe you’ll even find a new summer favorite!  Cheers

summerbeer2016Jack’s Abby Hoponious Union: This lager harmoniously combines lager yeast fermentation and west coast IPA hops. Its India style Pale Lager is like a traditional IPA but with a twist – it’s fermented cold and aged for extended periods. A blend of classic American hops creates a huge tropical fruit and citrusy hop aroma. A dry finish accentuates the pleasant bitterness and hop profile. Hoponious Union uses locally grown dehulled spelt from MA.

Dogfish Head 60 Minute: 60 Minute IPA is continuously hopped — more than 60 hop additions over a 60-minute boil. (Getting a vibe of where the name came from?) 60 Minute is brewed with a slew of great Northwest hops. A powerful but balanced East Coast IPA with a lot of citrusy hop character; it’s the session beer for hardcore enthusiasts!

Kona Big Wave Golden Ale: Big Wave is a lighter bodied golden ale with a tropical hop aroma and flavor – a smooth, easy drinking refreshing ale. The use of caramel malt contributes to the golden hue of this beer and our special blend of hops provides bright quenching finish.

Wachusett Blueberry Ale: The slight aroma of blueberry is balanced by a subtle flavor that gets fermented into this delicious wheat ale. It’s the perfect, refreshing beer for any season.

Newburyport Greenhead IPA: An assertive and hoppy west coast-style India Pale Ale. Bright hop aromas and flavors fade to a brief, smooth malt undertone and a clean, crisp, slightly bitter finish. This beer is brewed to bite you back!

Winter Warmers

Winter Warmers

christmasbeer   It’s the most wonderful time of the year – time for all of our favorite brewers to release their seasonal “winter warmers”. This season of brewing is all about malt. Winters are usually heavier, fuller bodied beers with less hops and more malt. Spices like clove, nutmeg, ginger and molasses are sometimes added too. Winter Warmer season tends to start in December with spiced lagers and ales and by January/February, we are drenched in heavier favorites like coffee porters and chocolate stouts!

Ballast Point

Ballast Point

Ballast PointIf you haven’t tried Ballast Point beer yet – you’re in for a a treat. This San Diego brewery has really mastered the art of brewing craft beer. We love all their beer, but this summer we’re digging The Sculpin Grapefruit. Grapefruit is the “IN” flavor right now, and it’s showing up in tons of craft beers – but we have to admit Ballast Point’s The Sculpin is one of our favorites.

Brewer’s Notes: Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit is a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

Fruit Beer

Fruit Beer

FruitBeerRemember how excited everybody was when Wachusett made a blueberry beer? It seemed like blueberry was the only fruit you could get in your beer. Well, those days are gone forever. Now you can find just about every fruit imaginable in your beer – apple, apricot, cherry, raspberry, watermelon, grapefruit, banana, and more. Although some fruit beers are available year round, they are considered “seasonal” by many brewers and the hot days of summer is when you will find the most options. I’m digging anything with grapefruit right now like Schoffennhofer Grapefruit and UFO Big Squeeze – but there are tons more that I still have to try. So jump in this summer and explore some new refreshing beer options, and decide which your new favorite is! Cheers!

Pumpkin Beer

Pumpkin Beer

PumkingBeerWith so many delicious Pumpkin beers on the market it’s hard to choose a favorite, but personally I always choose something from Southern Tier.

Southern Tier offers not one, but two delightful pumpkin brews. The first, Southern Tier’s Pumking is imperial Ale made with ale yeast, two types of malt and pumpkin. Pour this into a cinnamon-sugar rimmed glass and you’ve got the quintessential autumn ale. However, if you’re in the mood for a heavier beer, perhaps Southern Tier’s Warlock is for you. Warlock is a full bodied, malty stout that offers toasty, vanilla flavors of stout coupled with the scintillating taste of pumpkin pie. Try them both while we have them in stock, because as you know, they disappear quickly!

It’s Shandy Time!

It's Shandy Time! - Hickey's Wine & Spirits - Milford, MAHave you tried a “Shandy” yet? More importantly, have you tried a Curious Traveler Shandy?

The first from the Traveler’s new line of Shandys, the Curious Traveler is the classic shandy. This shandy is a crisp, sharp ale with a bit of lemon peel and spice – The perfect refresher on a hot summer day!

Next comes the Tenacious Traveler shandy. The same crisp, tart flavor as the classic, but with a bold dose of ginger and honey. This shandy is sharp, robust, and flavorful. A must try for the adventuresome types.

And finally, the Time Traveler shandy: a delightful blend of wheat beer brewed with fresh strawberries. An unorthodox blend for the “outside the box” shandy drinkers.

Kentucky Bourbon Cask Ale - Hickey's Wine & Spirits - Milford, MAIf you haven’t tried a bourbon cask beer yet – what are you waiting for?

Kentucky Bourbon Ale is aged up to six weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels. Subtle flavors of vanilla and oak impart into the ale as it rests in the charred barrels. Pleasantly smooth and robust – it’s the perfect pairing of ale and bourbon.
